Otago Winter Rapid 2024

June 9th 2024

The Otago Winter Rapid Open 2024 was held on 9 June with 26 players from Oamaru to Invercargill. Top seed Alex Nedyhalov shared first place with Leo Malcolm on 5.5/6 after these two drew their round three game and defeated all other comers. Third was shared by Azim Ismail and Jonno Christie on 4.5. The Under 1500 grade was shared by Paul Gudoy and John Tran on 3.5.

The Otago Autumn Rapid Open was held on Sunday 3 March – A healthy 21 players turned up despite only Rommel Ong and Juni Aguilar coming from outside Dunedin. The event was won by Quentin Johnson on 5½/6, after he upset top seed Alex Nedyhalov in round 3 and survived a blunder against Ong in round 5. Second was shared by Nedyhalov and Oscar Lobb on 5 points. The U1500 Grade was won by Tyne Grant on 4, with second shared by Naoki Kozakai, Samson Kazakov, Conor Kerr, Aidan Dixon and Noah Wilson. The Otago Summer Rapid Open was on Sunday 3rd December with a record field of 42 players from Dunedin, Oamaru, Queenstown, Wanaka, Invercargill and Christchurch. Alex Nedyhalov won with an unbeaten 5½/6. Second was shared by Alexander Sun and Daniel Bell on 5 points. The U1500 Grade was shared by Raymond Yang, Tyne Grant and Scott Samuel on 4 points, with Samuel taking the U1200 prize. Second in the U1200 grade was Samuel Mitchell on 3 points.

The Otago Spring Rapid Open was held on Sunday 3 September, with 30 players from all over New Zealand plus WFM Niki Mayrhuber an Otago exchange student from Austria. There was a four-way tie for first on 5/6 between Alex Nedyhalov, Quentin Johnson, Atlas Kerr and Ben Suazo. The Under 1500 grade was won by Tyne Grant on 4 points with Paul Gudoy, Ryan Zhou and Roam Penwarden sharing second on 3 points.
