Round 3 v Albania, NZ lose 4-2

Anthony made a bad mistake in the opening, he fought well but never quite got back into the game. John's opponent played a nice game, with a thematic kingside attack as Black in the QGD. Nicole missed a good chance in a back and forth game. Isabelle won a nice game, vigorously pursuing an initiative in the face of a material deficit. Daniel won a really impressive game as Black against a strong opponent. Anya lost a pawn and was a little too co-operative in exchanging pieces.

Black is going to face a bone in the throat on d6  7...d6? this doesn't help  8.Bf4! Ne7 9.Nxd6+ Kf8 10.Ng5 Be6 11.Qf3? Allowing Black a shot  11...Nf5? (11...Qa5+! is useful because  12.Bd2 allows  12...Qe5+ with interesting complications  13.Be2 Qxd6 14.Qxb7 d3 and it's mayhem left and right ) 12.g4 Winning material  12...Nxd6 13.Nxe6+ fxe6 14.Bg5+ Ke8 15.Bxd8 Kxd8 Knowing Anthony's legendary powers in lost positions I kept watching here. Two pieces for a Queen can be annoying for the superior side because, well two pieces is more than one and a queen exchange isn't available as a method of simplifying towards a simple material up win so sometimes the queen gets chased around. But unfortunately White has other advantages here, will Black even be able to get organised?  16.c5 Rf8 17.Qg2 Ne8 18.Qxb7 Nc7 19.Bg2 Nd7 20.O-O Be5 21.Rfe1 Bf4 22.Rad1 e5 23.Qb4 Rb8 24.Qa5 Rxb2 25.c6 Nb6

Just as Black has all his pieces developed and some other apparent trumps comes the buzz kill move  26.Qa3! forking the rooks  26...Bxh2+ 27.Kxh2 Rfxf2 28.Qd6+ Kc8 I still had a little hope but actually White has more than one kill shot here. The computer makes the amusing point that Kh1 and Kh3 win as Black can only take the bishop with check because of the necessity of preventing Qf8  29.Rg1 But this simple human move is also amply sufficient  29...Ncd5 30.Rdf1 Ne3 31.Rxf2 Nxg4+ 32.Kg3 Nxf2 33.Rf1 1-0

White is two pawns down but a little bit of initiative is worth a lot here - in principle and in practice the opposite coloured bishops amplify white's attacking potential. Isabelle plays really well for the rest of the game never giving her opponent any peace  27.Bf6 Qc6 28.Qc3 Re8 29.Bh8 f6 30.Bxf6 Collecting a pawn back with no loss of the all important initiative  30...Kf7 31.Bh8 Rg8 32.Re1 b5 33.Qe5 Qe6 34.Qc7+ Qd7 35.Qe5 Qe6 36.Qc3! 14.Nb5? White doesn't know what to do and is apparently worried that the knight on d6 could be a liability rather than a strength. But this allows Black activity based on hunting the dark bishop and activating the fianchettoed bishop  14...h6 15.Bh4 g5 16.Bg3 Ne4 17.b3 Bxb5 18.cxb5 Nc3 19.Rd2 Nf8 20.Bc4 Rxd2 21.Nxd2 Nxa2 The activity reaps a tangible reward  22.Ne4 Rd8 23.Bc7 Rd7 24.Bb8 Nc3 25.Nxc3 Bxc3 26.f4 Bd2 27.Kf2 Ng6 28.fxg5 hxg5 29.Ra1 Ba5 30.h3 Kf8 31.Ke2 Rd8

Putting the question to the dark bishop, it's interesting how neither of White's bishops actually seem to be good pieces.  32.Bxa7 The Bishop is sidelined here, although White has the option (which he soon uses) to give up the exchange to activate the bishops (32.Bg3 was the alternative, but then with the a7 pawn safe for the moment Black can go ahead with  32...Rd2+ and active play ) 32...Ne5! Now if White gives up the exchange he won't have two bishops for long ( Not 32...Ra8?? 33.Bxb6! ) 33.Rxa5 bxa5 34.Bxc5+ Ke8 35.b6 Nxc4 36.bxc4 Kd7 The king arrives in plenty of time to neutralise the White passers and the bishop therefore proves powerless against the rook  37.Bd4 Kc6 38.c5 Rd5 39.g3 e5 40.Ba1 Rxc5 41.h4 gxh4 42.gxh4 e4 43.Kd2 Rh5 0-1
