Round 2 v Malaysia, NZ lose 4.5-1.5

Anthony was outplayed in the opening and his exchange sacrifice was rather desperate and never worked out. John outplayed his opponent and almost converted, but allowed an annoying perpetual. Nicole and her opponent went into an early repetition, one of the very few quiet draws we were involved in. Isabelle's opponent chose the queenside castling and big attack plan in an h3 Kings Indian and won a nice attacking game. Daniel neutralised his opponents fireworks resourcefully and earned a draw. Anya seemed to be holding her own on the Black side of an Italian, but a sudden queen infiltration led to a collapse.

19.Bxa6 This looks flashy but GM Pruijssers in commentary rightly pointed out that after  19...Bc6! Black really threatens to take on a6, and so recovers the pawn with good control of the position  20.Bb5 Bxg2 21.Rhg1 Be4+ 22.Ka1 Rxd1+ 23.Rxd1 Rd8 24.f3 Rxd1+ 25.Qxd1 Bd5 26.c4 Bc6 27.Bxc6 bxc6 28.a4 Qe5 29.Qd2 f4 30.Ka2 Qe3 31.Qg2 Kb7 32.b3 e5 33.Qg4

Black's dominant queen position supporting a central majority means he is now totally winning, in fact he has a winning breakthrough on tap  33...c5? A shame, throwing away the win. White's queen gets access to the queenside and forces a perpetual (33...e4! Wins more or less instantaneously, Black can just insist on promoting one of his central duo! ) 34.Qd7 Qxf3 35.Qb5+ Kc8 36.Qe8+ Kb7 37.Qb5+ Ka8 38.Qe8+ Ka7 39.Qb5 Qb7 40.Qxc5+ Kb8 41.Qxe5 Qg2+ 42.Ka3 f3 43.Qb5+ Kc8 44.Qe8+ Kb7 45.Qb5+ Kc8 46.Qe8+ Kb7 47.Qb5+ Kc8 1/2-1/2

21...Nb4!? Very flashy  22.Qxb4 At this point in commentary the colour commentator demonstrated he was there mainly for his fun personality rather than his depth of chess knowledge by claiming Black's rook in front of a bishop on a diagonal was an example of Alekhine's gun. An amused GM Pruijssers pointed out that Alekhine's gun is actually both rooks in front of a queen on a file.  22...Bxf3 23.Bf1 ( obviously not 23.gxf3?? Rg5+ ) 23...Bxg2 24.Bxg2 Rg5 Threatening mate and the queen simultaneously. There was much excitement in the commentary until Daniel's resource was noticed  25.Qg4!
