Wellington Primary Interschool Championship
Monday, 1st August 2022

Organiser: Wellington Chess Club
Venue: Newlands Primary School, 200 Newlands Road, Newlands

64 players from 16 teams representing 8 schools (very chessy numbers) competed in the Wellington Primary Interschools at Newlands Primary, under the watchful eye of inexperienced arbiter Bill Forster, with more experienced Kapiti president Gordon Lyall doing much of the frontline heavy lifting and crucially providing some extra sets to cover for a couple of unexpected teams.

In the end Kelson A (Samuel Coles, Carrig Murray, Rose Connon and Stephen Ataalla) were worthy clear winners and qualify for the National finals. Their parent/coach Craig Coles who had managed to rescue the trophy from nearby Johnsonville school during a heroic unannounced lunchtime visit on the day was no doubt delighted. Waterloo school (Zachary He, Alex Chen, Samuel Harding, Ishaan Bhushan) made a late run to collect silver, and Crofton Downs A (Matthew Affleck, Raphaël Shindo, Yi Neng Lo, Luca Mistry) won bronze on game point tie-break.

Update as of 6/8/2022: Bill apologises for forgetting to recognise the individual board winners on the day. For the record they were 1. Samuel Coles (Kelson A), 2. Alex Chen (Waterloo), 3. Rose Connon (Kelson A) and Catherine Coles (Kelson C), and 4. Stephen Ataalla (Kelson A) all with 6/6.

The crosstable was as follows
