Obituary – FM Peter Long

It is with sadness that the NZCF passes on the news that Malaysian FM Peter Long passed away suddenly over the weekend.

NZCF Vice-President Paul Spiller writes:

Tragically FM Peter Long suddenly passed away yesterday and I thought that it would be appropriate to write a short obituary since Peter was involved both as a NZ Women’s team captain/ coach and also as a trainer in our arbiter training zoom program where several NZ trainers qualified for titles.

Peter devoted his life to chess training and coaching and held the role of secretary of the FIDE Trainers Commission for several years.

He was a friend to many kiwi players and was always very hospitable when NZers travelled to KL for the Malaysian Chess Festival.

Peter ran a  training academy for several years in KL and several of us were lucky to be given a tour a few years ago (in the picture Michael Freeman, Hilton Bennett and myself).

I invited Peter to the Hammer Hardware conference in Bangkok in 2019 and this picture of us is taken from then.

Peter travelled extensively to help with training in India, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia and visited NZ in 2019 for the N Congress and Oceania zonal.
