FIDE Torch Lighting Ceremony and GM Anand lecture

Saturday August 10th 2024 – Waipuna Conference Centre – Auckland

New Zealand has been asked to be the representative country from Oceania for this prestigious torch ceremony as part of the celebrations and preparations for the Olympiad in Budapest Hungary in September. Not to mention it is also part of the FIDE 100th anniversary celebrations!

There will be a visit from a number of FIDE dignatories and officials, including WGM Dana Reizniece-Ozola who is chair of the FIDE Development Commission, former multiple World Champion and Deputy FIDE President, GM Vishy Anand, a Torch Lighting Ceremony and dinner at the Waipuna Hotel & Conference Centre in Mt. Wellington, venue for many significant chess tournaments over the last 25 years.

GM Anand will also do a chess lecture starting at 12.00 pm, finishing at 1.30 pm on Saturday 10th (prior to the Torch Ceremony) and clubs are asked to nominate one or two of their players (mostly I have received nominations for strong juniors to attend) but it could be anyone interested. There is no charge to attend this lecture.

The above events will all take place in the Promenade Room (downstairs) at Waipuna Conference Centre.

Bookings can be made for accommodation at the hotel directly with the bookings manager Shabnam Khurana: email is ShabnamK@waipunahotel.co.nz
