Kapiti Junior Chess Championship, Kapiti
December 12th 2020

The Kapiti Junior Chess Championship saw players representing 22 schools from Wellington to Levin, compete across 4 divisions. In the premier Open Division, top seed Ryan Winter (Wellington College) suffered a surprise defeat in round 1 to Josh Langford (Wellington College). Former Paraparaumu College student, Geoffrey Gunawan, held the joint lead at the halfway stage but was not able to carry his early momentum into the later rounds. Going into the 6th and final round, Henry Zaslow (Onslow College) had a clear half point lead but had to settle for third place, after losing a tough battle to Kayden Loke who took the title on tie-break, from Ryan Winter. Kayden was unbeaten throughout the tournament scoring 3 wins and 3 draws from his 6 games.

In the Intermediate section, Sravya Moparthi (Hutt Intermediate) had a perfect score going into the last round, and despite a loss playing Black against Youan Salt (Levin Intermediate), she held on to win the section on tie-break, from Youan in second and Ryan Goodall (Levin Intermediate) taking third place. The primary section had the largest field of all the grades and saw Lucas Qu (Churton Park) win the gold medal with silver going to Max Wang (Johnsonville School) and bronze to William Ding (Eastern Hutt School).

The Kapiti Chess Club School Trophy, awarded to the top performing Kapiti Horowhenua school, was comprehensively won by Levin Intermediate who had a strong tournament.

Ewen won the match 4 games to 2. The games have been transcribed into this PGN file. (The live link that was previously here was time limited).

Thanks to all involved – Paul Spiller for organizing, Ewen & Martin of course, Tony Moores for use of his shop, Tony Booth for Arbiting, Hilton Bennett for running a book stall display, Nigel Metge for live coverage.

Here's an informative video in which Paul Spiller does his normal excellent job of explaining the wonders of chess to the general population.

Not everyone who wanted to watch could view the action. There were some noses pressed to the glass. Arbiter Tony Booth keeps a close watch on proceedings.

Hilton Sells Books
Murray Chandler and Tony Moores

It's chess! In a bookshop! Chess impresario Hilton Bennett quite rightly makes sure members of the public are introduced to the concept of a chess book.

NZCF President GM Murray Chandler reaquaints himself with Poppies Bookshop proprietor Tony Moores. Tony taught Murray at school in Wainuiomata. Believe it or not.

NZ Open Championship, Tauranga
January 14th-22th 2020

1st GM Daniel Fernandez (ENG) 8/9
2nd GM Vasily Papin (RUS) 6.5/9
3rd= Kirill Polishchuk, GM Darryl Johansen (AUS), IM Brandon Clarke (ENG), FM Ben Hague, IM Paul Garbett, IM Herman van Riemsdijk, IM Russell Dive 6/9
Full results on Vega.

A dominant performance by Daniel Fernandez winning outright by an impressive margin. His game was the last to finish (in either grade) in the final round, and he correctly, professionally and impressively held nothing back despite securing lone first place before the last round commenced. The New Zealanders who made the podium are joint New Zealand Champions.

Rowan Wood on ChessChat: Congratulations to the NZ Champions for 2020: Kirill Polishchuk (1st win), Ben Hague (2nd win), Paul Garbett and Russell Dive (7th win). The magic number is 6 points. Kirill drew with IM Sandler. That allowed Ben, Paul and Russell with wins over Nunilon Fulo, Noel Pinic and Daniel Gong respectively to join him. Defending champion Anthony Ker had the uneviable task of playing tournament winner, GM Daniel Fernandez in the last round and finished on 5.5 points in clear fifth place. GM Fernandez wins the New Zealand Open with 8 points, 1.5 points clear of GM Vasily Papin in 2nd place.

Remarkably Paul Garbett's 7th New Zealand Championship comes 46 years after his first in 1973/74. Russell Dive's comes a mere 33 years after his first in 1986/87! Kirill Polishchuk's first championship caps a solid domestic season and a great tournament with an impressive 2365 performance rating. Ben Hague's 2nd title signals a welcome return to form, after a below par year by his lofty standards. For once Anthony Ker missed out on a chance to improve his amazing NZ Championship statistics, but no doubt he can take comfort from securing both NZ Rapid and Lightning titles (see below), taking revenge on GM Fernandez in both and winning the Rapid tournament outright.

Ben Hague, Russell Dive, Kirill Polishuck and Paul Garbett. The others have been there before, Kirill Polishchuk is rightfully thrilled to hold the Silver Rook for the first time.

Hao Tang
Bob Smith and Isabelle Ning

Hao Tang from the Howick Pakuranga club won his last three games to win the Major Open tournament.

Isabelle Ning excelled, winning the Junior Open tournament and competing strongly in the Open to earn a last round pairing with NZ chess great, tournament organiser FM Bob Smith. Bob broke out some reindeer ears and a rarely seen whimsical side. Your webmaster apologises for being the worst photographer in the world.
