Chess for Champions of Determination

The New Zealand Chess Federation, as part of FIDE’s ‘2025 – the year of social chess’, today held a inclusive chess tournament in Auckland for players with physical disabilities as well as those who have Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Down syndrome, ADHD or cognitive delay.

‘Chess for Champions of Determination’ was organised on behalf of the NZCF by Evguenia (Jennya) Charomova (Councillor) and Paul Spiller (Vice-President).

Held at Parkside Specialist School in Pukekohe, this event attracted a small but competitive field of players who had a great day of chess. This was an incredible event where participants of all abilities not only played chess but also made new friends. Their loved ones were also able to see the positive impact this game had on them.

The tournament wasn’t just about chess — it was about making the game accessible to anyone who wants to enjoy it. Visitors and participants could also enjoy some delicious food and take photos in the photo zone.

Final Results:

  • 1st place Jacob (5/5)
  • 2nd place Oisin
  • 3rd place Austin

These 3 players were awarded trophies and every player received a participation certificate.

Many thanks to Jennya and Paul for organising, arbiter Bruce Pollard, volunteers Blessed Mambo and John from Papatoetoe Chess Club, volunteers Megan, Craig and Aneta, NZCF President Craig Hall, NZCF Admin Officer Richie Christie, photographer Carlos Vintimilla, Carol Willard (Parkside Specialist School Principal), their Board of Trustees, FIDE’s Planning and Development Commission (Primary Sponsor) and the Auckland Chess Academy who sponsored prizes.
